NEW! Son of Sketchercise

Announcing my second collection of personal doodles and warm-up drawings: SON OF SKETCHERCISE! I’ve culled through my sketchbooks and pulled together the best drawings from the past few years. The 46 page PDF contains almost 100 pieces of art, mostly from my personal work plus a few from client projects. Most of the drawings aren’t the funny kind from my Sketchbook Silliness webcomic (for those you need to get my book MOSTLY NONSENSE), though I did throw in a few rejected gag ideas. overall what it lacks in humor it makes up for in elbow grease.

Here’s a few sample pages (click to enlarge):

SON OF SKETCHERCISE! is now available to download in my store.

GoNoodle Champs

GoNoodle is a fun company with the goal of turning kids’ screen time into active time. Their materials are used in four out of five American public schools and at least 14 million kids play GoNoodle content each month.

They have a series of characters called Champs that they use in a lot of their content. They hired me to put together a fun group pose that they could use in various branding and marketing. They wanted something flexible that would work as a group pose (with or without logo) but could also be broken out into stand-alone characters.

After playing around with some composition ideas we settled on a combination of existing sketches/vector art for some characters and new/modified art for others. Then I pulled it all together with final art in Adobe Illustrator.

Baby Yoda Toy Concept for Hasbro

Last year Hasbro hired me to help out with early concept development for a Mandalorian toy featuring Baby Yoda (or Grogu as he came to be known). It was pretty straightforward: Sketch the little green guy holding a few specific items with an open-close grasping motion.

The toy, Galacatic Snackin’ Grogu, is now on the market so Hasbro has given me permission to show the work I did. Here’s how he turned out. Click the photo to see more images on the Hasbro website:

Play Doh Dino Crew Toys for Hasbro

Hasbro has a new line of dinosaur-themed toys called Play Doh Dino Crew. I got to help out with some of the early concept sketches.

Here are some early roughs exploring the possible look for a T-Rex and a Brontosaurus:

Here are some more sketches including transparent dino molds and a volcano playset (based partly on an early rough sent to me by the client):

After some review and feedback Hasbro asked for a front and top view of the play set, with a few changes:

After that the project left my hands and went into the Hasbro pipeline where more changes were made. The final result is a new line of toys called Play Doh Dino Crew. It features Crunchin’ T-Rex, Growin’ Tall Bronto, and Lava Bones Island.

Fur Real Dino Packaging Sketch for Hasbro

Last year I was hired by Hasbro to help out with a packaging illustration for a new toy in their Fur Real line, Snackin’ Sam the Bronto. He’s a cute plush dinosaur that comes with a plastic popsicle.

I was asked to do a tight pencil sketch of a prehistoric background, with the understanding that the sketch would then be given to one of their background artists to be painted in the Fur Real style. They also asked me to include one of their other dino characters, Munchin’ Rex, pushing an ice cream cart in the background, and a fold out picnic table in the foreground.

Here’s what I noodled up for them:

From there it went to another artist for painting. Now that Snackin’ Sam is in stores I finally get to see how it turned out. Looks like they decided to not use Munchin’ Rex in the background after all. But I like it:
