Yawning for Highlights Magazine

I had the pleasure of illustrating the “Tell Me Why” feature in the July 2016 issue of Highlights magazine, for a short blurb answering the question, “Why do we yawn?”. Highlights has been around since I was a kid (when magazines were still carved on stone tablets) and they’ve done a pretty good job of staying modern and fresh. If you haven’t looked at them in a while, check out their website and see what they have to offer for the kiddos in your life.

Renaissance Game

Recently I was hired by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune to help them pitch an idea for an interactive ad that included a simple animated Renaissance game. Here’s the concept art I worked up. The game needed to fit two different aspect ratios, so which is why there is so much empty space along the top and bottom:

The Atheist Test

One of my clients is Living Waters, a Christian ministry headed by Ray Comfort. Among other things they produce a line of eye-catching Gospel tracts. I think overall they do a good job of trying to share important truths with creativity and humor.

Recently they hired me to help refresh one of their oldest tracts, “The Atheist Test”. It had been a small black-and-white booklet with outdated graphics. They wanted to re-design it as a bright, colorful comic strip. My job was to edit down the text and then add some fun visuals.

The whole thing is 8 pages long. Here’s the first three pages. You can read the rest, or order copies, on the Living Waters website.

Pest Control Ad

Pest Control
I was recently hired by the Minneapolis Star Tribune to do some advertising artwork for a local pest control company. I’m withholding the company’s name at the client’s request until things are finalized, but they’ve given me permission to post a bit of the art on my blog. Here’s one of a few pieces of art I did for them. Hopefully more to come soon.

UPDATE: The client is Adam’s Pest Control and the client made an animated ad with the art which you can view here.

Sketchbook Update: American Eagle

110915-AmericanEagle-v2-800pxLike many Americans I’m overweight. I’ve been dieting and have lost ten pounds so far but still have a long way to go. It’s funny how dieting has led me to think about food and food issues even more than normal. We’ve become a nation of fatties which is both encouraging (“At least I’m not alone in this struggle”) and discouraging (“There’s so much food and so few role models”). Anyway, for some reason my subconscious cooked up this image during a recent doodle session. Tonight I colored it using Kyle Webster’s “Wet and Wild” watercolor brush which I’m really starting to like.

‘Messy Messages’ for Highlights Magazine

I enjoyed illustrating a story for the November 2015 issue of Highlights magazine called “Messy Messages. It was a fun story to illustrate and I had a lot of fun creating the characters.
