Sketchbook Update: Happy Birthday!

092115-HappyBirthdayCupcakes-800px-v2

For the longest time I’ve been meaning to sketch something up I could use to wish people a happy birthday on Facebook, via email, etc. Yesterday I was noodling around in my digital sketchbook and I started drawing silly cupcakes. Eventually it morphed into this. It’s a bit bizarre but it will do for now.

If you’d like to post/share this image on Facebook, feel free. If you’d like to use it for any commercial ventures please contact me and I’ll be happy to discuss pricing.

Thought I’d try something different for today’s warmup sketch. Every week artist Mallory Carlson posts a random shape on her Twitter feed and challenges other artists to do something with it. Above is this week’s shape and my take on it.

Sketchbook Update: Monday Morning Inbox

I just got back from our family vacation over a four-day weekend. Naturally there was a ton of email to dig through. I’ve been working on it most of the day and still am not done. This is what it feels like.

Sketchbook Update: First Time Skiing

I was noodling around with a drawing prompt from the Pose Drawing Sparkbook that reads, “Skiing for the first time.” I liked how the initial doodle turned out, so I decided to tweak it, clean it up, and add color.

In hindsight I maybe should have chosen different colors for the gloves and hat to make them pop more. I also think I over-rendered the tree a bit and could have made the branches a bit looser and bouncier. But that’s what sketches are for: playing around and making mistakes so that next time you can do better.
