Preschool Puzzles for Patch Products (Say That Five Times Fast)

A few months ago I created a large batch of illustrations for Patch Products, a leading toy and game company. They had a series of puzzles for very young children that needed a refresh, complete with new artwork.

Today a package arrived containing all thirty of the updated puzzles, bundled in packs of three. I’m told that they’ll be popping up on the shelves at Walmart very soon if they haven’t already. You can also order them online directly from Patch.

I did almost 100 illustrations for the project. A few of them are shown above.

Puzzles for Patch Products

A few months ago I was hired by Patch Products to illustrate two puzzles for preschoolers, one with a farm theme and one with a zoo theme. Along with drawing all the animals I was to “hide” specific shapes within each puzzle for the preschoolers to find as they put the puzzle together. The puzzles are now available for purchase from Patch Products (Links: farm puzzle, zoo puzzle). I get no commission from the sale of the puzzles so this isn’t an attempt to make a little profit off of a blog post. Just wanted to let everyone know.

Here’s how the final art turned out (the unusual border shape is intentional):

Character Design: Rhino

Last year I did some concept development work for an animated motion picture currently being developed in Hollywood. I was brought on board to help design some animal characters. The catch was that I had to try to match the style of another artist who had already done quite a bit of their visual development.

I did some sketches of an ostrich and a near-sighted rhino. Ultimately it was decided that I wasn’t quite capturing the look they were after and so we shook hands and parted ways. Oh well, you can’t win them all. But they were great people to work with, they paid me for my work, and we parted on good terms.

I can’t say too much about the project because as far as I know it is still in development. But I did retain the rights to my unused sketches and can show them to you. I posted some ostrich samples a while back. Today I came across some of the rhino drawings in my files and thought I would post them as well:
