Viking Art

These were done recently for a print campaign at a large insurance company. (The screen on the laptop is intentionally left blank for the art director to fill in later).

Story Boredom

I just discovered a great new art blog, Story Boredom. Most of the contributors are anonymous, but the rumor is they are all storyboard artists who work in feature animation. It is known that one of the members is John Sanford (co-director of Disney’s Home on the Range). Whoever they are, they are incredibly talented. Check it out.

Revised Self-Promotion Card

Thanks everyone for the great feedback on my self-promotion postcard (two entries ago). Based on that feedback, here is a new version. Not sure yet if I like the background colors. I think keeping only two background colors helps unify it more, but it’s hard to find two colors that will compliment each of the varied faces (which are all grabs from previous projects for clients). But I do like the tag line “Multiple Personalities”. What do you all think?

Interactive Facial Anatomy for Artists

A friend just sent me a link to Artnatomy, a fascinating site using Flash technology to help artists study facial anatomy and expressions. It highlights the different face muscles and lets you push and pull them to see how they work to communicate emotion. This is way better than anything you might find in an “anatomy for artists” book. Check it out!

Time for Some Self-Promotion!

It’s time for a new “snail mail” campaign to promote my work. Here’s a rough mock-up of a postcard idea (click the images for a larger version). I’m trying to market myself as a character designer, so I’ve collected 11 of my favorite designs from 2005 into a psudo-Brady Bunch format.

This is going to be an expensive campaign so I want to create something simple, unique and appealing. I’d love to get some feedback from the readers of my blog (all three of you). What do you think? Too many colors? Does the text need to say more? (I know it should be darker). Is this even a good concept? WIll it stand out from all the other mailings that cross an art director’s desk? I really want to know your gut-level no-punches-pulled opinion.

Oh, I should mention that there will be a short bio and a list of my services on the back of the card. Feel free to post a comment and let me know what you think. Thanks!

Classic Disney Shorts Coming to iTunes

I’m pretty pumped. Very soon iTunes will be offering some of the classic Disney shorts on iTunes. According to applelinks.com:

“Classic animated shorts produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and featured on Buena Vista Home Entertainment’s upcoming “Disney at the Academy Awards,” including the 1933 Academy Award-winning “The Three Little Pigs” and the 1935 Academy Award-winning “The Tortoise and the Hare,” will also be available.”

Can’t wait to watch those animation classics on my video ipod. I’ve also heard that Disney will soon be releasing a DVD boxed set of their classic shorts. That could just be an internet rumor, but I sure hope not. I’m still drooling over the “Disney Treasures: Disney Rareities” DVDs that I got for Christmas. Inspiration galore!
