Top Ten Things They Never Taught Me in Design School

A slightly cynical but very well-written article. Since I have personally been through the rocky transition from art school to running my own studio, I found myself nodding at almost every sentence. Give it a read.

French Fries. French Toast. French Tract?

The cartoon gospel tract I illustrated back in January has now been translated into French by Living Waters Canada. You can pre-order the French version here. Also in the works are translations in Spanish and Tagalog (Philippines). Wow, super-cool!

How Nerdy Are You?

Take this test to find out. It’s geared more towards math and computer nerds than animation and comics nerds, but I think there’s probably a lot of crossover between the two. I scored surprisingly low as a “Nerd Wannabe”. Either I’m not as nerdy as I think I am, or there’s a whole lot of people worse than me (yikes)!

I am nerdier than 25% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

Hollywoodland: The Superman Suicide

I’ve always been a fan of Superman, as a kid I was obsessed with him. So this movie looks fascinating. In Hollywoodland Ben Affleck stars as George Reeves, the real-life actor who played Superman on TV in the fifties. At the height of his fame Reeves shocked the world by committing suicide. Newspaper headlines everywhere declared “Superman Dead”. But others would soon claim it was murder. To this day the case remains unsolved.

I’m debating whether to see the movie when it comes out. On the one hand, I have a soft spot for anything Superman-related, and a good bio flick can be fascinating. On the other hand the movie is rated R for sexual content, plus I’m afraid the dark side of Reeves’ personal life would cast a shadow over my childhood love of Superman.

The movie also stars Adrien Brody, Bob Hoskins, and Diane Lane. You can view the trailer here.

Illustration Friday: Skyline

I recently illustrated this diagram for an article about how to study/interpret the Bible (ancient Biblical city on the left, the modern era on the right, bridge in between). Sometimes it’s fun to stretch myself and try something different, so I thought I’d go for a “cartoon retro” look. It turned out ok, but I don’t think I nailed it.

EDIT: There’s a chance this illustration will be on national television! The client, Christian radio host Todd Friel, will be interviewed by Kirk Cameron on TBN’s “Praise the Lord” broadcast Thursday, August 10. I’m told they may use my diagram in the discussion.
