Packaging Art for Northern Lights Toys

Packaging Art for Northern Lights Toys

Create-A-Lure lets kids paint their own fishing lures and then use them to catch real fish. It’s a fun idea and if it existed when I was a kid, it might have got me into fishing.

Northern Lights Toys wanted to update the artwork on some of their Create-A-Lure products. They had one illustration they really liked and wanted to update the rest to match. I was hired to create some new toy packaging artwork that matched their existing design.

For the first package I was asked to draw a large-mouth bass chasing six different lures, with room for the logo and other text in the upper half. I started with some rough thumbnails playing around with different compositions:

The client chose option “A” which I worked into a tight sketch:

Based on client feedback I made a few tweaks and added some color:

After that I did two more packaging illustrations, one featuring a “lunker” (which is a giant fish) and one featuring a Northern and Walleye.

Create-A-Lure is currently available from several retailers or from the Northern Lights Toys website. I’m told the new packaging should be rolling out soon.
